Following the Money Down the Bipartisan Trail

Question: Which of the following presidential candidates lists financial giants Citigroup and Goldman Sachs among his or her top contributors: Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Barack Obama, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain or Mitt Romney?

Answer: All of them.

Check out the list of top contributors provided by the Center for Responsive Politics by way of the Federal Elections Commission and you’d be hard pressed to separate the Democrats and Republicans from the liberals and conservatives.

Nor is it necessary to single out Citigroup and Goldman Sachs. The Morgans, JP Morgan Chase and Morgan Stanley are on most lists along with Goldman Sachs and other gilded household names.

One other thing these front runners have in common: not a single labor union appears on a candidate’s list of top supporters.

Why is big money jumping in and big labor waiting?

I think most of big labor is waiting for Iowa.

There's not much question about where their sympathies lie. Most unions have seen and heard what they wanted from Edwards, but they want an indication that he can win before they jump in and endorse and donate big money.

This is why being way behind Clinton and Obama in money is, for now, less important for Edwards than it might seem. He's raising about as much per quarter as Rudy and Mitt. If he wins Iowa or takes a close second, I predict you'll see some strong signs of support from unions.

Oh, here's the link to the Flash demo of candidates and connections:
