The
Bombing Officer was published by E.P. Dutton in 1982. Sylvester
Stallone and Chuck Norris had not yet changed our defeat into
victory by rescuing non-existent POWs, and the last thing we wanted to read about
was the moral struggles of a young diplomat in a small backwater of that war.
But the book nevertheless
got one or two kind reviews, although I have been unable to find them in the
attic. And it says what I wanted to say about
the many young American officers, civilian and military, who stubbornly
saw the world as it was. They often paid with their careers, and even sometimes with their
lives.
Perhaps The Bombing Officer can even be of some small use today. We
still see our nation as a pitiful helpless giant. We still charge blindly around the
world to prove were not. No book is likely to keep our
child-leaders from their nonsense, but it cannot hurt to try.
